Heaven on Mars
, NoCap's third album on Atlantic, is a record assembled rather than built. Its strongest idea is its first six minutes, and it never attempts anything that size again: 21 tracks in 70 minutes, averaging 3:22 a track, and only one of them — the opener, "Astronaut Tears / Love Don't Stay" at 6:00 — gets past five. Then it plays three songs it has already played, and says nothing about what they are. A running order argues about what matters; this one leads long, fills its middle with short tracks, and closes with eleven and a half minutes of tracks 3, 7 and 10.

Two things in its favour: no filler-stacking here — 70:51 over 21 tracks is lean — and three titles carry two names each ("Astronaut Tears / Love Don't Stay", "1B / Shift", "241 / Glitchin"), the one sign of an architecture that isn't about length.

One long opening, then nothing of that size

6:00 is the album's only running time past five minutes. The next longest, 4:18, is the repeat of "Basic Burner" at track 20. Set the closing repeats aside and nothing after "1B / Shift" (4:10) reaches four minutes: tracks 9 to 18 run 29 minutes between them, an average of 2:55.

Eight of the 21 tracks finish under three minutes, and four are consecutive — tracks 16, 17, 18 and the second "Leverage" at 2:55 — immediately before the close. Convention runs the other way, and this album inverts it: a fact of the file, not an impression.

Three endings that explain nothing

Tracks 19, 20 and 21 return titles first used at 10, 3 and 7: "Leverage", "Basic Burner", "Angels Smile". Not a second disc: all 21 tracks sit on disc 1 of 1, each with its own Apple ID. Their runtimes don't match their namesakes: 2:55 against 3:04, 4:18 against 4:17, 4:16 against 3:58. Nothing in the data marks them remixes, alternate takes or bonus tracks; no deluxe edition is indexed.

Two of the album's tracks carry earlier dates — the "Leverage" at track 10, dated 5 June 2026, and the "Basic Burner" at track 3, dated 26 June 2026 — where the other 19 carry 2 October. Both return at the close: the two songs that arrived first are the two the album closes with twice. What that means is my reading, not a stated intent. One reading is deliberate: the record loops back on itself. The other is less flattering: an October album carrying June singles on its back end, the doubles a stocktake rather than a callback. I lean to the second, because a record that means its closing three as a statement labels them as one, and this one labels them as nothing. Nobody has explained them: no press, no statement from NoCap or Atlantic.

The one decision the data confirms

All 21 tracks are credited to NoCap alone, no featured artist in any title — which is not how his records usually work. Wikipedia logs guest appearances on four of his projects — The Backend Child, The Hood Dictionary, Mr. Crawford, The Main Bird — naming Rylo Rodriguez, Quando Rondo, Lil Durk, Kodak Black, NBA YoungBoy and Rob49. His first Hot 100 entry, 2023's "Thang for You" at No. 91, was him guesting on Rylo Rodriguez's single.

Read generously, it is the boldest thing here: 21 tracks with nobody to hand off to, every short one earning its place on writing alone. Read less generously, it matches the rollout: no features, no press, no announcement. Mr. Crawford (2022) is still the peak — No. 8 on the Billboard 200; Before I Disappear Again (2024) reached No. 18 after a year of teasing, a delay and an August release. This one does none of that: it arrives quietly, and it arrives odd.

The verdict

Assembled, not built. The album gives its best six minutes to the first track, its middle to speed, its last eleven and a half to three songs it has already played; the only other thing the data confirms is that nobody else is on it.

One thing would change the verdict: disclosure. If tracks 19 to 21 are reworkings with a reason, those minutes become the record's most interesting move, not its least; if the short middle is one continuous run rather than 21 separate plays, its case improves. Until then, Heaven on Mars leads with the one thing it was sure of and ends repeating three of its own titles.
