Twenty tracks, eighty-eight minutes: 883 in the rear-view

GLI ANNI DEGLI 883 is not a reissue and not a victory lap. It is twenty songs that already existed, put in a new order — and the order is the argument.

What you are actually holding

Start with the basics, because the packaging is slightly misleading. This is a twenty-track compilation released on 4 November 2026, one hour and twenty-eight minutes long, credited to 883, filed under Pop, and carrying a ℗ 2026 Warner Music Group - X5 Music Group line. There is no new song on it. Nothing here is a demo, an outtake or a remix. Every one of these recordings already existed, so the only genuine editorial act in the package is the running order.

Compilations are usually judged on what they contain; this one should be judged on how it behaves. A running order is a claim about how a band wants to be heard, and this one makes a specific, fairly stubborn claim — that 883 are an albums act wearing a singles act's clothes, and that the right way to hear them is in long, unhurried blocks rather than as a jukebox. You can disagree. It is still a position, and a more interesting one than a straight chronological dump.

How it is sequenced

The shape is odd from the first minute, in a way I have come to like. It opens with three songs of nearly identical weight — "Come mai" (4:17), "Nessun rimpianto" (4:22), "Io ci sarò" (4:37) — three mid-tempo pieces in a row, no fanfare, no obvious single to grab you by the collar. Only at track four does the song that shares its name with the whole enterprise arrive: "Gli anni ('96)". Putting the title song fourth rather than first is a small, deliberate shrug, and it sets the tone.

The record keeps gesturing at the past without ever fully unpacking it. "Nord sud ovest est" turns up at seventeen, sharing a name with a 1993 album; "Gli anni" shares one with a 1998 collection. Elsewhere the sequencing is well-behaved rather than curated: the two longest tracks, "Sei un mito" (5:07) and "La dura legge del gol" (5:01), sit at sixteen and eighteen, deep in the back half. The closer, "Quello che capita" (4:51), is neither the longest nor the shortest thing here. It just stops, which is the correct way to end a compilation.

Where to start

Only five of the twenty tracks come in under four minutes; the average across the record is four minutes twenty-four. The band's best mode, on this evidence, is compression — so start at the short ones. "Bella vera" (3:34) is the tightest thing here. "Se tornerai" (3:39) and "Weekend" (3:47) follow close behind, and "Ti sento vivere" (3:54) is the best argument that these songs know exactly when to leave.

Then go back to the top and play "Come mai" again: it earns its place as track one, and it makes the opening trio make sense. Five songs, about nineteen minutes — enough to know whether you are staying.

Where it sags

The middle. Tracks nine to fourteen — "Nella notte", "La regola dell'amico", "Gli avvoltoi", "Il grande incubo", "O me o (Quei deficienti lì)", "1 in +" — run twenty-six minutes and fifty-one seconds with nothing under 3:58. Each song is fine; six in a row is a plateau, and it is the one place where sequencing for mood rather than momentum costs the record something.

An eighteen-track version, cutting two from that run, would hit harder and finish sooner. Twenty is the rounder number, and I understand the appeal, but it is the reason this is a very good compilation rather than a great one.

The verdict

GLI ANNI DEGLI 883 is honest work. It does not pretend to be a new album, it does not pad itself with edits, and it puts twenty real recordings in an order someone thought about. The sequencing makes an argument, the argument is legible, and the argument is only half right: this is a band best heard in short bursts, and the compilation keeps asking you to sit through long ones.

If you have never played 883, take the five marked above, in that order. About nineteen minutes, no commitment.

If you already know them, the running order is the only new information on offer — and it is genuinely interesting information, particularly the choice to bury the title song at four. Play it once front to back, at a volume that does not require attention, and see whether you agree that the middle sags. I think you will.
