God Of Angels Trust

God Of Angels Trust Album ∙ Metal ∙ 2025 Volbeat On the Danish rock band’s ninth album, Volbeat singer/guitarist Michael Poulsen abandoned his usual songwriting routine for an anything-goes approach. After taking a year off to recover from his third throat surgery and tour with his death metal band Asinhell, Poulsen reconvened with his Volbeat bandmates—bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen and drummer Jon Larsen—to write the songs for what became  God of Angels Trust . “We were not used to that kind of long break,” Poulsen tells Apple Music. “So, when it was time for Volbeat to return, we were filled up with fire and gasoline at the same time. Because it felt like starting over again after that break, we thought maybe we should approach this record like the first Volbeat record, when we didn’t think too much about structure.” Poulsen tested the theory with “In the Barn of the Goat Giving Birth to Satan’s Spawn in a Dying World of Doom,” a mouthful of a song that manages to be catchy while ha...

Songs Of Last Resort

Songs Of Last Resort Album ∙ Metal ∙ 2025 The Haunted Arising from the ashes of the important mid-'90s Swedish death metal band At the Gates and featuring former members of Witchery and Face Down, the Haunted went through countless lineup changes during the late '90s before finally releasing The Haunted Made Me Do It in 2000, confirming the excitement surrounding the band. Back in 1996, guitarist Anders Björler and bassist Jonas Björler left At the Gates, eventually ending up as early members of the Haunted, along with ex-Seance guitarist Jensen and ex-At the Gates drummer Adrian Erlandsson. Though it took them nearly a year's time to find an adequate vocalist, they eventually settled on Peter Dolving from Mary Beats Jane after Earache approached the group about contributing music to the Earplugged 2 compilation. Soon the band went into the studio with this lineup and recorded its self-titled debut, which won plenty of praise from the metal community. Unfortunately, Erlands...

Tsunami Sea

Image
Tsunami Sea Album ∙ Metal ∙ 2025 Spiritbox For their second album, Canadian metalcore phenoms Spiritbox found inspiration at home. In fact, vocalist Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer’s home island of Victoria, British Columbia,  was  the inspiration. “When we were trying to get this band off the ground, we were feeling really stuck and hopeless,” LaPlante tells Apple Music. “I was thinking back to that time, and it brought back this subconscious dread, because we’re near all the scary tectonic plates on the West Coast. Since we were little kids, everyone’s been telling us about how ‘the big one’ is coming.” Of course, a massive earthquake at sea would cause a massive tsunami. “A tsunami is a horrible natural disaster that can’t be helped, but imagine if the entire ocean was a tsunami, not just one small part of it,” LaPlante offers. “It felt like such an over-the-top, perfect example of the drama you feel when you’re depressed. And that was my mental state at the t...

The Last Will And Testament

Image
The Last Will And Testament Album ∙ Metal ∙ 2024 Opeth For their 14th album, Swedish prog wizards Opeth created a concept record around the reading of a will. Partly inspired by a talk-show segment and partly by the massively popular TV show   Succession , Opeth guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt decided to write about an inheritance with a twist. “I stumbled upon the idea of putting the whole story as it would’ve been written in a legal document, like a proper old piece of paper with paragraphs like, ‘My daughter will get the country house,’ and things like that,” he tells Apple Music. “But it’s more like a confession of sorts, where the patriarch reveals secrets about himself, his paranoia, and his regrets. And some of these secrets will immediately affect his children in an existential kind of way.” The Last Will and Testament   also marks Åkerfeldt’s return to the death-metal vocal style of Opeth’s early days. “I wanted to bring back the screaming vocal, but at first, I f...
